What Does a VIN Tell You?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle manufactured since 1981. Each character in the VIN tells you something specific about the vehicle: the country of manufacture, the manufacturer, vehicle type, restraint systems, check digit, model year, plant, and sequential production number.

When you enter your VIN into our recall lookup tool, we query the NHTSA database to find every recall campaign that applies to your exact vehicle. This is more precise than searching by make/model/year alone, because some recalls only affect certain production runs or vehicles with specific equipment packages.
